A ventilation hood at the beach is the first thing in the kitchen to go. It is the only appliance whose job is to pull outside air through itself, and at 1st through 5th Street that air is loaded with chloride most of the year.
What actually fails
The blower housing corrodes before the motor does. Once the housing loses material the wheel sits fractionally out of true, and an out-of-balance wheel chews its own bearings. By the time you can hear it, the wheel is usually the part that has to go, not just the bearing.
Speed controls fail from the top down. The highest speed carries the most current, so the highest speed is the one that stops working first. A hood that has lost only its boost setting is telling you where to look.
What the visit looks like
The liner comes down and the blower comes out. Housing, wheel, capacitor and control are checked separately, because replacing the whole assembly when only the wheel is finished is how a ventilation repair turns into a four-figure job for no reason.
Ducted hoods on the beach also need the roof or wall termination looked at. A corroded damper that will not open makes a healthy blower look dead.
Why the airflow goes before the noise
Most people call when the hood gets loud. The airflow has usually been dropping for a year before that, and it is worth knowing what to listen and look for.
A hood that has lost capture is easy to test without instruments. Steam from a pot on the front burners should be drawn back and up rather than rolling out into the room. If it rolls, the system is moving less air than it was designed to, and there are only a few reasons why.
The first is the filters. Baffle filters on the coast collect grease and then collect salt on top of the grease, and the two together make a surface that degreasing alone does not clear. Filters that have gone dull and slightly rough to the touch are restricting.
The second is the wheel. A blower wheel with deposit built unevenly across its blades is both moving less air and running out of balance, and the imbalance is what eventually kills the bearings.
The third is the duct run and its termination. Beach houses often have a short run to a wall cap, and a wall cap in this environment corrodes. A damper flap that no longer swings freely is the most common single cause of a hood that sounds perfectly healthy and does nothing.
Makeup air
A professional range under a high-capacity hood in a tight modern house can pull harder than the house can replace. When that happens the hood does not perform to its rating no matter what condition it is in, and in a house with any other combustion appliance it is worth taking seriously rather than shrugging at.
The symptom to notice is a door that gets harder to open when the hood is on high, or a hood that works noticeably better with a window cracked. Neither is a hood fault. Both change what the right repair is.
Ductless and recirculating hoods
Not every hood on the beach is ducted. A recirculating hood passes air through a charcoal filter and returns it to the room, and those filters have a service life measured in months rather than years in a kitchen that cooks regularly. A recirculating hood that has stopped clearing the room is usually a filter question before it is a mechanical one.
